This picture is a picture of three different MRI scans of three different individuals all on the thigh.
The top one is of a 40 year old triathlete. The middle one is of a 74 year old sedentary male and the bottom one is of a 70 year old triathlete.
Now we're going to discuss the middle one. So as you can see, the lighter tissue, the lighter colour is fatty mass (Adipose Tissue). The darker colour is the quadriceps muscle and the little white bit is the femur bone.
You can tell the difference between the triathletes and the sedentary male.
Now I'm not here to discuss the mortality rates of these individuals, but what I am going to say is, who do we think out of the 74 year old and the 70 year old has an easier life?
Who do we think struggles less and is in less pain daily because they have more muscle mass and are probably stronger?
We're not saying that if you have stronger legs, you are automatically going to live longer, but what I am saying is you will improve the quality of your life.
This MRI scan is just another piece of evidence that backs up the statement that 'you're never too old'. Take this as your sign to get active, not necessarily become a triathlete but pick something you enjoy and work at it!
Live, move and feel better, for longer.
